Locke & Herkimer Watermain Floods Neighbourhood

By: Craig Hermanson,
LockeStreet.com Coordinator

21 January 2003: This morning we woke up to either not enough water or far, far too much. Where the water wasn't trickling out of the shower head it was pouring in the front door. A Burst watermain at the intersection of Locke and Herkimer sent water skyward 10 feet and then flooding down the street. The water left basements damaged, schools and preschools closed, residents without water, hydro or gas as well as a gaping hole that stretches right across the intersection at Locke and Herkimer.

24 February 2003: Looking for news of the Locke/Homewood Floods? Looking for other news?

Me without a charged battery for my camera. If you have some digital snaps you'd like to share, please send me an email.

Those who saw the images on TV or witnessed the torrent of water first-hand will agree it was stunning. I couldn't imagine waking up to water flowing in my front door. My best wishes go out to those affected.

With batteries charged, I went back out at 6PM to capture some video and pictures of the scene. I've posted a small 15 Second QuickTime movie and some photos.

The official word from the City is that a 30 inch cast iron watermain burst early this morning. At this point the City is expecting the repair work will be completed by sometime tomorrow. Although water services were restored to the area early this afternoon, as of this evening dozens of homes were still without utilities.

A voluntary evacuation center has been set up at Dalewood Recreation Centre at 1150 Main Street West and will remain open all night and a bus has been located at Herkimer and Dundurn as a warmth station.
