Day Weekend” 10am to 4pm.
EVENT 24 April 2004: Celebrate spring
on Locke Street with the merchants who will host a stret sale
and events throughout the day in support of McMaster Children's
Hospital. Saturday April 24, 2004.
13 February 2004: Locke Street Will Be Open
For Business
Councillor Brian McHattie and City of Hamilton staff met
with residents and Locke Street business owners at a Public
Information Meeting regarding plans for watermain replacement
and road reconstruction on a section of Locke and Aberdeen.
20 June 2003: There is good news and bad news.
All three Area Accommodation Review Committee's (AARC) voted to
close community schools and reduce capacity just as the mandate
from the Provincial Supervisor directed them. On the other hand,
committee recommendations included new buildings in affected areas,
fewer closures than suggested and voting members (those committee
members not employed by the board) successfully appended their
challenges to the process and terms of reference to the final
reports.
28 May 2003: The Annual General Meeting of the
Kirkendall Neighbourhood Association will take place on Thursday
June 12, 2003 at 7PM at the Ryerson Recreation Centre.
27 May 2003: Revitalize us, don't victimize
us say urban school parents. The Hamilton Wentworth District School
Board is forcing established neighbourhoods through an ‘Area
Accommodation Review’ which is nothing more than a re-branded
School Closure Process, window dressed to give the appearance
of an open and consultative process.
27 May 2003: The Canadian Pacific Railway Empress
Steam Engine will be visiting our neighbourhood on Monday,
June 9, 2003 from 5.30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The train will
be situated at the CPR yard on Studholme Road, off of Aberdeen
Ave. (at Longwood).
16 May 2003: How many children can fit into
one school? It would appear that the Conservative Government by
way of Supervisor Murray, its appointed school board of one, is
trying to determine just that.
06 May 2003: Current process of the Area Accommodation
Review makes a balanced outcome unlikely. Really, anyone in Hamilton
living near an existing public elementary school needs to be concerned
about their school's future -- unless there is already a student
population of 550, 700 or more. We need to be sure they don't
look at this as an Earl Kitchener, Central, Strathchona or Ryerson
issue. The current scenario presented to the City West Area Accommodation
Review could negatively affect residents throughout the lower
City. Some more immediately than others.
06 May 2003: Locke Street in West Hamilton has
been the site of two major (30") water main breaks. A month
after the second broke (Feb.23) area residents met on March 24th
under the banner: Treading Water on Locke Street (at St. Joseph’s
church) to discuss the matter. Chaired by Ken Sherman,
four presentations were made.
30 April 2003: As Earl Kitchener School Council
representatives on the City West Accommodation Review Committee
(ARC), we would like to update our School community on the proceedings
of the first meeting (held on Tuesday April 29th 2003). The primary
agenda of this Hamilton Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB)
committee is to eliminate 350 pupil positions.
30 April 2003: This is a great neighbourhood
and it's been improving. Witness the renaissance on Locke Street
and new life on Dundurn if you have any doubts. But feel our community's
revitalization is threatened if the Hamilton-Wentworth District
School Board has its way with their School Revitalization Strategy
24 April 2003: Come celebrate Spring on Locke
Street with the merchants who will host events throughout the
day in support of McMaster Children's Hospital. Saturday
April 26, 2003.
24 April 2003: Three architectural walking tours
are coming up in our neighbourhood. The Mansions of Durand (April
27); The Southwest Artists Studio Tour (May 10
and 11); and a Historic walk of Locke Street South (June
8).
11 April 2003: For two days in May the Hamilton
Southwest Artists will present the Fourth Annual Artists Studio
Walking Tour. Join in the fun Mother's Day weekend, May
10th and 11th.

of your valuable time on Saturday April 26, 2003.

information event with neighbourhood residents on the recent watermain
breaks on Locke Street.

premier street, Locke South.
17 March 2003: The Staircase is pleased to invite
everyone to an extravaganza of Canada's best feature films: March
18-28 2002. An extravaganza of Canada’s best including
children's matinees on the weekend of 2 FABULOUS KID FILM PROGRAMS.
17 March 2003: We're having a concert. But this
is no ordinary concert. It's a concert with a cause — an
urgent cause. We're talking about the preservation of the Red
Hill Valley, the Niagara Escarpment, and Cootes Paradise —
our three most spectacular urban natural endowments.
05 March 2003: The Friends of Red Hill Valley
have spent quite a bit of effort over the years examining the
budget documents of the City and former Region. Our interest in
the water pipes issue began in December 1996 when senior regional
staff submitted a report to Regional Councillors on their 1997-2006
Capital Budget Business Plan.

and new photos.
24 February 2003: Yesterday was quite the day.
Frustrating, saddening but also exhilarating and uplifting. How
so when 1 to 2 dozen of your neighbours have been flooded? Because
this neighbourhood showed what it was made of.
23 February 2003: A month and two days after
a similar break two short blocks away—another break. Who's
to blame? Blame the weather? I hear the freeze thaw cycle is hard
on those old pipes, but that's a copout. Aging infrastructure
in older neighbourhoods which has been let crumble while council
chases development dollars.
12 February 2003: We are getting ready for our special
18th Anniversary Year at the MAD Creative Arts School, starting
with our March Break 2003 program.
02 February 2003: The Supervisor has approved a school
"revitalisation" plan. Small neighborhood elementary
schools, in both the rural areas and the inner city, will be closed
and students consolidated into schools of 500-700 pupils. The
lower city and Dundas will be targets for closure of schools in
the next 25 years as that is where there are the least students.
02 February 2003: Just a reminder that the next meeting
of your local Neighbourhood Association (KNA) is Monday February
3rd, 7:00pm at the Ryerson Rec Centre on Duke St.
29 January 2003: What a media darling Boyd has turned
into. This morning Boyd was accompanied by Don Cameron of La Jardinère
on CTV's Canada AM.
28 January 2003: Yes, it has been cold. But it's also
been colder. It's clear the problem isn't the weather, but an
aging and neglected infrastructure that's to blame for the burst
pipes.
28 January 2003: More cold weather has brought more burst
pipes. United Family Martial Arts on Dundurn is organizing a fundraising
event to lend support.
27 January 2003: Boyd, the dog who's role is Manager of
Customer Relations at La Jardinère ought to be promoted
to Vice President of Media and Public Relations. And given his
freedom.
