The Locke Street Festival 2000

Report from the Festival Coordinator

25 October 2000: Tammy Savickis

The first annual Locke Street Festival took place Saturday September 9th, 2000. We had approximately 60 Locke Street Merchants, many vendors dispaying their various wares and creations, and over 60 volunteers make this one day festival a smashing success. This family fun-filled day also included a charity BBQ, The Kid Zone, Mini Car Cruise, Millenium Fashion Show, Bavarian Garden, Live Musical Entertainment, Food Vendors, Balloons and Face Painting for The Kids, Historical Tour Of Locke South and so much more.

Our streets were filled with the various sounds of five area musical acts. These bands include Lyndsay Blanch, Deborah McIvor Band, Just Amanda, Molten Blue and The Sara Inksetter Band. The music was enjoyed by all those enjoying a cool beverage at the licenced bavarian garden which was sponsored in part by Molson's.

The celebrity charity BBQ was sponsored by M & M Meat Shops. We had a choice of a hamburger or a hotdog plus a drink for $1.50. The proceeds from the charity BBQ went to the H.A.A.A. Playground Fund. We raised $960.83 to give the H.A.A.A. Playground Fund!! Celebrities on hand that day to help out we Sunni Genesco from K-Lite FM, Bob Morrow-Mayor of Hamilton, Marvin Caplan-Ward 1 Alderman, Mary Kiss-Ward 1 Alderman, Terry Cooke and many more. What a great show of support for all those who participated--Great Job Guys!!

The "Kid Zone" included lots of things for kids of all ages to do. We had three large bouncy toys, face painting (by the Kirkendale North Association), various interactive toys supplied by Explor-a-toy (located in the Dundurn Plaza), crafts supplied by the Girl Guides and best of all free balloons. We couldn't have done this without the help of all those who participated in the Kid Zone--Thanks for everything.

The Millenium Fashion Show and Mini Car Cruise were a big hit on the street. Seeing fashions from the early 20's to the present with a grand finale of a beautiful wedding made the fashion show a hit not to miss. The mini cruise consisted of about 10 vehicles of various years and makes all shined up in top performance. What a sight they were--we are hoping to make next years cruise bigger and better than ever.

Another great highlight was the "Secret of Locke" and if you live or work in the area you know what I am talking about. Locke South has been one of the best kept secrets in Hamilton. There is magnificant history, architecture and good old fashioned family atmosphere that make this area one that is desireable to live, work and play. Locke Street Festival was fortunate enough to have the author of "Up and Down Locke South" Bill Manson give guided tours of the secrets he found on Locke South.

Most important of all is Teamwork. The Locke Street Festival Committee and Locke Street Merchants would like to extend a huge THANKS to all the volunteers that helped make this festival run smoothly. We couldn't have done it without all of you and your community support was greatly appreciated. As Coordinator, I would also like to personally say THANKS to my committee which included Dana Thompson, Aimee Huffman, Kathleen Linehan, Toni Iduciano, Tony Greco, Joanne Cszuak, Joe, Don Cameron and the Fashion Show Committee. You guys were the greatest.

This year we registered our festival with the "MY MILLENIUM" as a first time event in the year 2000 and received a certificate and Millenium Medallion for our efforts. The Locke Street Festival Committee would like to ask anyone who has photos or video tape coverage of Saturday September 9th--our first festival, we would like to reimburse you for copies of whatever you have so we can make a time capsule of our event. The Locke Street Festival will be an annual event and we hope to make next year's festival bigger and better. Next year's festival will be held on Saturday September 8th, 2001--the first saturday after Labour Day--HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!!
