Boyd's Been Busted

By: Craig Hermanson,
LockeStreet.com Coordinator

27 January 2003: Boyd, the dog who's role is Manager of Customer Relations at La Jardinère ought to be promoted to Vice President of Media and Public Relations as well as his freedom. What other breed but a collie-x could corral a $130 fine into thousands of dollars worth of media attention. The reason for all the attention and quarter-page photos is the sillyness of the whole thing.

If you don't know, Boyd is the friendly pooch who greets you at the corner of Locke and Charleton outside of La Jardinère. Boyd, like other colourful individuals on the street, is part of the character of our neighbourhood. For many, meeting Boyd has become part of the 'Locke Street experience'—our collective memory of a place.

Perhaps it's the petty nature of the fine as one Spectator letter writer put it, or the feeling that some bureaucrat just doesn't get it. Whatever, peoples sensitivities have been offended.

Yes, there is tong-in-cheek to the campaign to "FREE BOYD!" But as another Spec writer put it, this is a tight-knit community, and Boyd is one of our own. We feel put upon by the clueless.

"Please help free Boyd by signing the petition"

All of Locke has united behind Boyd with a petition campaign. So visit a shop on Locke and check out the posters as you ask yourself, "what were they thinking?"

If you have something to say on this matter, join a discussion in our discussion forums.
